Here’s Why Health Experts Recommend Against Extending the Luzon-wide Lockdown

Health policy experts consulted by President Rodrigo Duterte have given the recommendation of lifting the current Luzon-wide lockdown on April 30. However, they suggest that certain parts of the region remain under quarantine.

“There was almost a consensus that an ECQ (enhanced community quarantine) doesn’t have to be implemented over the entire Luzon,” Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque said in a virtual press conference this April 21.

“Their recommendation is to continue ECQ (enhanced community quarantine) where there is an outbreak of COVID-19 – NCR, Cebu (City), and Davao (City).”

Roque later added Calabarzon and portions of Bulacan as areas that should remain under lockdown after April 30.

The recommendation was given on the basis of finding a balance between social distancing measures and reducing damage to the economy. Areas suggested to remain under quarantine are those classified as high-risk or having high numbers of COVID-19 cases.

There was also mention of the recommendation by Presidential Adviser for Entrepreneurship Joey Concepcion to lift the Luzon-wide lockdown on April 30 but continue quarantine measures only in high-risk localities or communities.
