Here’s What the “Lizzie McGuire” Revival Would Be About if It Pushed Through

Lizzie McGuire

We were sad when it was announced that the Lizzie McGuire revival would be canceled.

In an interview with Cosmopolitan, actress Hilary Duff shared what the series would have been about if it aired.

She said, “My character was moving back home with her parents because she caught her soon-to-be fiancé cheating on her, and she was falling flat on her face at the moment and being like, ‘I need to pivot because everything that I thought was wasn’t, and I’m turning 30. What the f*ck?'”

The revival series would have followed Lizzie as she turns 30 years old in New York. She has her dream job as an assistant to a decorator, a boyfriend, and a Brooklyn apartment.

Duff was supposed to be joined by the original show’s cast, including Hallie Todd, Robert Carradine, and Jake Thomas. The animated Lizzie version will also be back but she’ll still be 13 years old.

Duff has remained optimistic, saying, “in my 34 years I’ve realized that everything does happen for a reason. There’s a time and a place for everything. It just wasn’t her moment.”

The actress currently stars in the How I Met Your Mother sequel, called How I Met Your Father.

“The stars didn’t align”

The revival was already in production when the original creator of the series, Terri Minsky, stepped down as the Disney+ revival’s showrunner.

At the time, a spokesperson from Disney explained in an issued statement: “Fans have a sentimental attachment to Lizzie McGuire and high expectations for a new series. After filming two episodes, we concluded that we need to move in a different creative direction and are putting a new lens on the series.”

Minsky revealed that she was fired. No reason was shared, but Duff later wrote on Instagram, saying that she would be “doing a disservice to everyone by limiting the realities of a 30 year old’s journey to live under the ceiling of a PG rating.”

In a separate post, Duff revealed that the show has been completely canceled. She said, “I know the efforts and conversations have been everywhere trying to make a reboot work but, sadly & despite everyone’s best efforts, it isn’t going to happen. I want any reboot of Lizzie to be honest and authentic to who Lizzie would be today. It’s what the character deserves.”

Duff added, “We can all take a moment to mourn the amazing woman she would have been and the adventures we would have taken with her. I’m very sad, but I promise everyone tried their best and the stars didn’t align.”

Lizzie McGuire ran from 2001 to 2004 and followed the titular character, portrayed by Duff, as she navigated teenage life. The show is also known for sequences featuring an animated version of Lizzie. In 2003, it was adapted into a film starring all the actors in the series.
