If you were born in the ’80s or ’90s, chances are, you’ve seen Sex and the City or have fallen in love with the show. When it premiered in 1998, it was considered revolutionary as the series followed four single female friends in New York City openly talk about their love and sex lives.
Time included the series in its list of All-TIME 100 TV Shows in 2007, while TV Guide dubbed it as one of its 60 Best Series of All Time in 2013. More recently, Sex and the City has been included in the best TV shows of all time by Rolling Stone (2016), The Guardian (2019), and Games Radar (2020).
After two film adaptations and a prequel series called The Carrie Diaries, the show will be back for a 10-episode season. There’s a catch, though: Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristin Davis will return, but Kim Cattrall will not be joining.

Parker, Nixon, and Davis announced the new show, which will be called And Just Like That, on Instagram by sharing a teaser trailer showing scenes in New York. The words “and just like that…” and “the story continues…” are typed on the screen, a throwback to similar scenes in the original series.
Parker, who played Carrie Bradshaw, captioned her post with, “I couldn’t help but wonder… where are they now?”
Fans will remember “I couldn’t help but wonder” as Carrie’s oft-repeated line.
According to the official press release, “The new Max Original series is based on the book, Sex and the City, by Candice Bushnell and the original TV series created by Darren Star. The series will follow Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte as they navigate the journey from the complicated reality of life and friendship in their 30s to the even more complicated reality of life and friendship in their 50s.”
It comes as no surprise that Cattrall will not be joining the revival. In 2019, The Daily Mail asked if she would appear in another Sex and the City movie. She responded, “Never. It’s a no from me.”
Rumors of a feud between Cattrall and Parker have swirled for years, dating back to the show’s second season in 1999. The cast and crew denied all rumors, but they began to speak out after the show ended in 2004.
According to executive producer Michael Patrick King, “Kristin, Cynthia, and Sarah Jessica became one group, and Kim never joined mentally.”
Reports say that the feud began because of pay disparity, with Parker getting paid the most out of all the stars. King said, “‘The show doesn’t exist if Sarah Jessica wasn’t the blonde star of the show, that’s number one.”
The feud came to a head when in 2017, it was announced that the third movie will not push through, with rumors saying it was because of Catrall’s demands. The actress later said that the only demand she made was that she didn’t want to do the movie. She added that she had said no in 2016.
The following year, Cattrall’s brother Christopher passed away. She announced the news on Instagram and thanked those who offered their support. After a few days, she posted another photo, saying that she does not need Parker’s “love or support.”
She said, “Your continuous reaching out is a painful reminder of how cruel you really were then and now. Let me make this VERY clear. (If I haven’t already) You are not my family. You are not my friend. So I’m writing to tell you one last time to stop exploiting our tragedy in order to restore your ‘nice girl’ persona.”
And Just Like That will be available on HBO Max and will begin production this year.
