Gov’t to Create “Social Media Policy” to Accredit Bloggers Who Want to Cover Presidential Events

Communications secretary Martin Andanar believes that bloggers should have an opportunity to cover presidential events even in the Malacañang Palace.

The Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) is creating a “social media policy” that “will allow social media publishers to be recognized as legitimate sources of information, and provide a system of accreditation.” If this pushes through, bloggers and social media personalities and organizations may soon find themselves covering presidential events.

Andanar said that this was to express gratitude to bloggers for the virality they’ve helped create during campaign season.

Moreover, he mentioned that the popularity of pro-Duterte groups on social media is something that should be “embraced” and “controlled.”

However, not everyone agrees. There are some who are worried that doing this might blur the line between what is legitimate and pseudo-journalism.
