Heads up, film enthusiasts! You’ll get to watchโor maybe rewatchโthe award-winning film “Gitling (Hypen)”! It will premiere at Cinema ’76 Film Society from February 7 to 11 and 13.
Helmed by Jopy Arnaldo, the film stars Gabby Padilla and Ken Yamamura. “Gitling” follows the story of Jamie, a Filipina translator, and Makoto, a Japanese director who crossed paths in Bacolod and worked together to create Ilonggo subtitles for the latter’s film. Apart from friendship, the two found something they longed for: to be understood.
The film is also presented in five distinct languages: English, Hiligaynon, Nihongo, Filipino, and a made-up language with color-coded subtitles.
“I’m a fan of language, and it felt right that my first film centered around two worlds, how they can bring us together or separate us, and how [we] can find understanding through them or despite them,” Arnaldo said.
“Gitling” won Best Screenplay at the 2023 Cinemalaya Film Festival under full-length feature film category. It also bagged the Best Screenplay award and was nominated for Best Lead Performance at the 2023 QCinema International Film Festival. The film was even selected at the JOGJA-NETPAC Asian Film Festival of the same year.
