Did you know that aside from Vatican City, the Philippines is the only country in the world that hasn’t legalised divorce? Let’s face it: not all marriages are happy ones and there are many reasons as to why someone would want to leave their husband or wife and end their marriage, some of which are quite serious, such as physical abuse or even emotional abuse.
Well, for the 5th time now, the Emmi De Jesus and Arlene Brosas from the Gabriela Women’s Party filed a divorce bill, which includes various grounds for divorce, including psychological incapacity and irreconcilable differences. Some of the benefits that divorcees would be able to get include child support and equal division of conjugal assets.
I am not married nor do I claim to know what an unhappy marriage feels like, but I have heard a lot of stories of people being abused by their partners and even of single mothers not being able to re-marry because divorce isn’t legal in our country. Hopefully, if divorce does become legal in the Philippines, more people will be more content with their lives, if not much happier.
What do you think? Do you think divorce should be legalised in the Philippines?
