Frozen’s Anna and Kristoff, Kristen Bell and Jonathan Groff, are Doing a New Movie Musical!

Frozen’s Anna and Kristoff are reuniting to do an all-new movie musical!

Kristen Bell and Jonathan Groff, who voiced the beloved Disney characters, are reportedly starring in the film Molly and the Moon which is set to be a live-action musical comedy from the creators of American television sitcom How I Met Your Mother, Craig Thomas and Carter Bays.

Bell and Groff play an expectant couple, named Kate and Brian, who sing songs to their unborn child, Molly, who embarks on a magical adventure of her own inside her mom’s womb, using her parent’s voices to guide her to reach “the moon” (her birth).

Though it sounds very much like a happy and heartwarming movie, the inspiration for it isn’t quite so. Bays opened up to Deadline that the story comes from his own experience with his newborn child who had a rare genetic condition, Jacobsen Syndrome, that required surgery upon birth. This “epic life or death battle” that his son was going through within the first weeks since his birth made Bays wonder what kind of journey must be going through his son’s mind and he realized that there was a beautiful story he could tell with this, about a baby struggling to survive to go home with its parents and just live.

Explaining their decision to incorporate music, Bays also shared that he and his wife would sing songs to their son while he was in the incubator because they couldn’t touch him. “My wife made up a little simple lullaby about his name that she would sing to him that just sort of came to her there in the NICU, and that actual melody and lullaby is what we use in the movie,” Bays said.

“Kate, our lead character, the mother, is singing a lullaby to her pregnant belly and the camera pushes in on her pregnant belly and that is our entrance into a whole other world where we see a mysterious little girl in a rowboat in the middle of the ocean, looking up at the moon and hearing that song, hearing that lullaby come through the moon,” he continued. “It’s the moment you realize there’s this little soul, this life that wants to exist and be in the world and wants to reach the sound of that voice. She doesn’t know what it means or who it is. It just sounds like love, and she wants to reach it, and that’s sort of the moment that we connect the two worlds of our movie, the world of Molly and the real world that her parents are living in.”

There’s no scheduled date for the premiere just yet but we’ll definitely be looking forward to it!
