Former Miss Universe Dayanara Torres Reveals She Beat Cancer

Dayanara Torres

Many of us still remember Dayanara Torres, 1993’s Miss Universe titleholder. She may have represented Puerto Rico in the pageant that was held in Mexico, but she became popular in the Philippines when she joined the following year’s pageant, which was held in Manila. She sang “A Whole New World” with Peabo Bryson and stayed for five years, even learning Filipino, starring in a movie with Gary Valenciano, and becoming Aga Muhlach’s girlfriend.

Dayanara is making news again by announcing that she beat melanoma, a type of cancer. She joined close friend Pops Fernandez on Instagram Live, where she shared updates on her condition.

She said, “I had melanoma cancer and it was found out last year. I started treatment for a year and I thank the Lord and everyone for all the prayers. It’s amazing, the amount of love, support, and prayers that I received.”

She added, “Last week, on Monday, I had my last test and everything was negative. I’m done with treatment, it took me a year and then now for the next two years, I’m going to be doing tests every three months just to be safe.”

Dayanara told Pops that she would love to visit the Philippines again. The last time she was here was in 2017 when she judged the Miss Universe pageant. She said, “It’s one of those things that’s always at the back of my mind that I have to go back and this crisis happens, and it makes me realize that if you want to do something, do it. As soon as this is over, I definitely need to go back. I miss everybody.”
