For the first time in its 500-year history, Frankfurter Buchmesse (FBM), the worldโs oldest and largest book fair, has selected the Philippines as its Guest of Honour (GOH) for 2025.
The country will present over 700 titles from 70 publishers, authors, and creatives in the fair in Germany. These works range from new adult to children’s, education, and graphic novels.
As the GOH, the Philippines will also shine a light on the developments made over a century after its hero and renowned prolific writer, Dr. Josรฉ P. Rizal, accomplished and published his magnum opus, Noli Me Tangere,ย in Germany.
His seminal work inspires the theme for the Philippine participation, โThe Imagination peoples the air. “
This achievement is made possible through the joint efforts of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), the National Book Development Board (NBDB), the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), and the Office of Senator Loren Legarda.
From the Philippines to Germany
The Philippines’ role as the GOHย was a lengthy undertaking led by the vision of Senator Legarda, who has supported the countryโs continued participation in the FBM since 2015.
She explained, โThe Philippinesโ presence as Guest of Honour at the worldโs most prestigious book fair is a testament to what we can achieve if we nurture our peopleโs talent. We can make a difference and rally stronger support for the continuous advancement of our book industry and the creative industry through consistent and sustainable government initiatives.โ
