Food Camp Burgers and Sandwiches – It’s All Good!

Food Camp Burgers and Sandwiches – It’s All Good!

When in Manila, you’ll come across a LOT of burger joints/restaurants claiming that they have the best burgers. I’ll give it to them – that’s advertising. Anyone who has a business would know that advertising can improve their success. However, there is one particular burger place in the heart of Katipunan that remains humble by being quaint yet laid back, unassuming yet full of pride, and silent yet screaming with all the right flavours.

The best part is that they provide generous servings that are big enough to feed even the hungriest athlete’s appetite. They also fit any budget – believe it. This place is called Food Camp Burgers and Sandwiches!

Food Camp

Gabino, the genius behind Food Camp welcomed us with a big smile and a question intended to the break the ice: “Gutom na ba kayo?” My friends, being the crazy, down-for-anything bunch that they are, screamed “yes” without hesitation! That night, we were served with Gabino’s take on the most classic American food known to man: burgers!

His “baby”, as he calls it, is actually a product of a 4-year office career turned sour. On of one his trips to Banchetto, a weekend food bazaar, he came across a burger stall with a  line of avid fans and decided to try it out. His conclusion? He could make better burgers than that! And just like that, he soon found himself in his own burger boothdom serving a long line of people with burgers of his own recipe.

The aroma inside the joint made my hungry tummy growl. Gabino, or Bimbong, aims to make Food Camp look and feel as homey and as chill as possible. “This started as a really small place. The kids from UP requested a TV for the UAAP season, so I put up a TV; the kids from Miriam asked for a Wi-Fi connection so they could study, so I subscribed to a Wi-Fi service; one basketball team cramped their 6-foot selves into this small joint and suggested I add more chairs, so I did. The place is like this because of my customers. I give them what they want.” Talk about spoiled customers! (No complaints here!)

Gabino prepared his personal favorites for us to try.

Our absolute favorite! Food Camp’s edition of mojos, but this one’s not dry, It’s how mojos should taste like. Dip it into Food Camp Burger’s garlic sauce and you’ll never want to go home!

Onion Rings

I’m not a fan of onions, or onion rings, for the mere reason that they tend to make people’s breath stink. But everybody had a sweet comment about Food Camp’s onion rings, so I just had to try them out. They weren’t bad at all. And they didn’t make my breath stink… as much as usual. Haha!

 The Nachos

Food Camp prides themselves in making sure they only use top quality ingredients. To guarantee this, they make almost everything on their menu themselves – including their own recipe sauces.

Food Camp’s House Blend Iced Tea

Food Camp’s House Blend Iced Tea is refreshingly confusing. The different flavors bursting from this glass of happiness are guaranteed to make you ask, “What is this?” A must try that compliments anything on their menu.

When asked why his burger is so different, Bimbong confidently said, “Food Camp buys high grade angus and serves high grade angus – no ifs, no buts. We don’t like to put much of this or much of that because that would only kill the real taste of our food. We opened our kitchen, too, so our customers can see how their meals are being prepared. We don’t like them to feel like they are being robbed. We want transparency.”

And it is true, they don’t put a lot on the patty – a little bit of pepper and a little bit of salt and it’s good to go!

Miilllllkshakesss!!!

Who could resist? And they’re not too sweet, mind you! You might not even notice when you’re close to finishing a glass!

After our delicious meal, we were giddy – like we ate a ton of candy. We were laughing at the smallest jokes and we just felt a certain kind of high. We had a… burgergasm!

By far the best burgers I have ever tasted! (And I’m not even saying this just to be nice.) It’s not just the food or the coziness of the place, either; it’s also the attention and the warmth of Gabino that makes your visit a complete experience overall.
