Finland Is Getting Rid Of All Their School Subjects

Finland is doing a complete overhaul of the educational system.

As one of the top-ranking countries when it comes to education, the Scandinavian nation will be introducing a revolutionary concept in their school system — removing school subjects from the curriculum!

Finland would be the first country to do so in the world. Separate classes teaching subjects such as physics, math, literature, history, or geography will be discontinued.

According to Helsinki’s Department of Education, the traditional school system was appropriate and beneficial at the beginning of the 1900s, but is no longer fit for the 21st century.

This system will be introduced to secondary (high school) students, beginning at the age of 16. Students will no longer take individual classes for separate subjects, instead studying events and phenomena in an interdisciplinary format. The Second World War, for example, will be studied through the perspective of history, geography, and math. And by taking the course ”Working in a Cafe,” students will learn English, economics, and communication skills.

The new system encourages students to choose their own field of study, in line with their own ambitions for the future, as opposed to taking a bevy of subjects and wondering if they would have any practical use in the future. The teacher-student interaction would also change, as instead of sitting behind desks, students and teachers would work together in small groups to discuss problems.

Thoughts on this? Do you think we could do this in the Philippines?
