BTS fans in the Philippines are celebrating the upcoming 8th anniversary of K-pop superstar group, BTS, with a rather SEA-nsational initiative.
Under the project “Whalien is Finally Heard,” Filipino ARMY came together to adopt eight humpback whales from the Babuyan Marine Corridor through Balyena.org, which is a non-profit organization founded in 2009 that conducts research on dolphins and whales in the Philippines. Adoption funds will be used for the organization’s research and conservation projects.

Seven of the eight adopted whales were named under each of the BTS members while the remaining one was named after the BTS ARMY. The initiative was a tribute to the group’s song “Whalien 52” which talks about the world’s loneliest whale, the 52-Hertz Whale, which allegedly sings at a frequency significantly higher than what other whale species could possibly ever hear.
The song was released in 2015 as part of the group’s album, “The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Part 2” and written as a metaphor for those who grew up feeling alone, alienated, and like they’re never heard or understood.
BTS will be commemorating its 8th anniversary on June 13 and 14 through an online live-streaming event called BTS 2021 Muster Sowoozoo.
