Filipino Artists Represent in Mongolia

Malaya

Two Filipino artists have been chosen over dozens of other artists from around Asia in a high profile competition that has won them a trip to Mongolia to represent the Philippines at the Global Tiger Translate Festival. Tiger Translate is a platform by Tiger Beer to uncover emerging Asian creatives and give them opportunities to work with international artists. Since 2006, Tiger Translate has hosted events and exhibitions around the world and facilitated dozens of collaborations with high profile Western artists.

Starting in December last year, Tiger Translate hosted a series of live art battles in bars around Manila. In February 2012, Quix Marquez of Burnwater Design Studios emerged triumphant, having won the most audience votes during his battle against Anjo Bolardo at Craft Pub and Grill.

His bold and innovative graphics have won him a trip to represent the Philippines at Tiger Translate Mongolia in Ulan Bator on 24th August. He will be joined by fellow Pinoy artist Bjornik, whose love for Manila won him the ‘Fan Favourite’ competition that was hosted on Tiger Translate Facebook page. Hundreds of art and design lovers from around the world expressed their appreciation for Bjornik’s beautifully detailed illustration of the streets of Manila.

The duo will fly to Ulan Bator to actively contribute to its rapidly emerging contemporary art scene by joining forces with fellow visiting artists from Australia and US. During the past few months, Tiger Mongolia teamed up with the Mongolian Arts Council to launch a competition to identify the countries’ hottest contemporary artists. Over a period of 3 days, the finalists from the Mongolian competition will be paired up with the visiting artists and taken on a cultural tour of Ulan Bator, to collect inspiration and content through photography, film and sketches. On the final day, they will translate their findings into art. This final live art output will take place in front of a live audience at the Tiger Translate main celebration that will include performances by local and international DJs.

Tiger Translate is Tiger Beer’s global initiative to uncover Asia’s brightest emerging artists and musicians and give them opportunities
to collaborate with established international counterparts. Currently in its sixth year, the platform has facilitated collaborations between Asian artists and the likes of Rostarr, Faile, Jeremyville, Surface To Air and Jon Burgerman. Each year, artworks by emerging Asian artists are curated according to a specific theme and these artworks are showcased online and at events and exhibitions across the world. The theme for 2012 is ‘Streets’, a celebration of the energy that infuses the streets of Asian cities.
