Ella Jay Basco, who plays Cassandra Cain in the DC film Birds of Prey, is dedicating her role to her Filipino fans.

According to a tweet, “This movie is for you, Philippines! My grandpa is from Pangasinan and my grandma is from Zambales.”

Ella Jay is the niece of Dante Basco, a Fil-Am actor known for playing Rufio, the leader of the Lost Boys in the 1991 film Hook. Ella Jay’s father is the eldest of the Basco brothers, who have also explored acting.

Ella Jay has appeared in Grey’s Anatomy, Happyland, Superior Donuts, Veep, and Teachers.

In Birds of Prey, she plays Cassandra, an orphan thief part of Harley Quinn’s (Margot Robbie) girl squad, which also includes Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell), Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), and Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez).

The film had positive reviews, with Rotten Tomatoes saying, “With a fresh perspective, some new friends, and loads of fast-paced action, Birds of Prey captures the colorfully anarchic spirit of Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn.”
