Our very own Rachelle Ann Go is slaying the stage as Fantine in the Philippine run of the Broadway musical Les Misérables, and now, another Filipina is joining the cast, this time for London’s West End.
Fil-Am Eva Nobledeza will essay the role of Eponine, a young girl who sacrifices her life for Marius, a key leader in the 1832 June Rebellion in France. Her solo “On My Own” is one of the musical’s most popular songs.
Nobledeza was announced for the role by the Les Misérables Twitter account, which posted photos of her in character just hours ahead of her first performance at the Queen’s Theater in London.
After the production, the production tweeted, “She absolutely smashed it. Eva Noblezada does not disappoint.”
She first entered theater when she joined the West End production of Miss Saigon, taking on the role of Kim, which Lea Salonga also portrayed. Soon, she will reunite with Go for Les Misérables, and she will join the Broadway cast of Miss Saigon next year.
In an interview with ABS-CBN, Nobledeza credits her Filipino upbringing to her success. She said:
My dad went to college to be a music teacher actually, and he would always hear me singing and my Filipino grandparents would always put me on the table and say, ‘Sing, sing, sing for everybody’. So with that they really did push me to do what my heart wanted me to do and that was perform and sing. So, when I was a little girl, and I grew up in my grandparent’s house, any chance that they had have me sing they would push me and do it. So I think that’s one of the main reasons I’m here today, really.
