Feeling Snacky? Here are some Easy Midnight Snacks you can make!

Words by Gemma Casimsiman

All-nighter junkies (or even people who stay up late waiting for someone to text them back) like me know that we all have the urge to eat in the middle of the night. But chowing down some can lead to consequences in the future. At the same time, getting up from the comfort of your bed and the warm embrace of your laptop’s radiation can be quite…disheartening.

Though we may not be able to eat a second dinner, there are still some quick and easy snacks you can make and bring back to your room in a flash. You have a variety to choose from—from preparing something first thing in the morning or taking just 5 minutes of your time.

7. Cereal

“How original,” is what’s probably swirling in your mind right now. However, cereal contains a balanced carb and protein ratio—perfect for a light, midnight snack. Just, avoid the sugary kind. Yes, that chocolate cereal is tempting but we don’t need your body clock being ruined anytime soon.

6. Greek Yogurt

It’s an easily digestible snack before going to bed. Grab a cup and enjoy each spoonful while watching some TV before going to bed. Pair it with some fruits (like pineapples or peaches) if your mouth is itching to chew something.

5. Oatmeal

Ah, yes, good ‘ol boring oatmeal. See, this snack can go in two ways: you can prepare it in the morning and leave it in the fridge—like overnight oats—or throw in some steaming cup of milk or water in case you want something warm.

Tip: Add a little peanut butter or cinnamon. I swear to you it is the best thing I’ve ever done with my oatmeal.

4. Brownie in a Cup

Though we are trying to avoid sweets in the middle of the night, we can’t really help and crave for something sugary especially if you won’t be sleeping anytime soon. All you need are 2 tablespoons of melted butter, water or milk, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, ¼ teaspoon of vanilla extract, a pinch of salt, 4 tablespoons flour, a mug, and a microwave. Pop it for 60 seconds and you can come right back to your warm bed.

3. Variations of berries

Fruits are encouraged in terms of midnight snacks. Berries are most preferred as they are easy to prepare, chew and digest. No need to cut up some kiwis or bananas if you’re just wanting a piece or two. Plus, you can store them for a long period of time and grab as many as you want.

2. Sandwich

Peanut butter and jelly are your best friends. Easy to make and no complicated preparations needed. But, if you are leaning on the healthier side, toast 2 pieces of bread and slice an avocado with a glass of milk. Though the avocado will take a few moments to cut up it’s worth snacking on.

1. Cheese and Crackers

Just grab some Skyflakes and any type of cheese you have at home (I dip it in cream cheese if anyone’s curious). Aside from a deliciously healthy and creamy snack, you also don’t have to delve into the hassle of washing any dishes. Sometimes, I store some crackers in my cabinets and pray for an ant-less night.
