ENTERTAINMENT: Kiernan Shipka to play Sabrina Spellman in new television series

Get ready for another bewitching series coming this year!

Business Insider reports that Madmen alumna, 18-year-old Kiernan Shipka, will be playing Sabrina Spellman in the Archie Comics series.

Back in the late 90’s – early 00’s, Spellman was portrayed by Melissa Joan Hart in American sitcom ‘Sabrina The Teenage Witch’.

According to Archie Comics.com, the upcoming TV series will be based on “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina”, a graphic novel. Executive producer and Archie Comics Chief Creative Officer Robert Aguirre-Sacasa reports that similar to the CW’s Riverdale (where he also serves as director and producer), the show, mainly about the life of the half-human, half-witch high schooler would be a “darker, more macabre version [of Sabrina]“.

“We’re incredibly excited for people to see Kiernan make this iconic character her own,” he tells ArchieComics.com.

The “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” was also written by Aguirre-Sacasa along with artist Robert Hack, which is reported to “detail compelling and shocking re-imagining of Sabrina the Teenage Witch’s occult origins“. This includes themes of coming-of-age, horror, the occult, family reconciliation, and heroism.

Archiecomics.com also reports that the show will be produced by Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Brothers studios. No official date has been announced when the show will be released.
