ENTERTAINMENT: ‘Despacito’ ties top spot for longest run as US number 1

Slowly, but they did it.

On August 28, Despacito, the Latin remixed soundtrack by Luis Fonsi featuring Justin Bieber has tied the record for being on top for most weeks on the US singles chart. The song is tied with One Sweet Day by Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men.

The remixed version has now spent 16 weeks on the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the 7 days through Thursday, August 24, tracking service Nielsen Music said.

The original version of Despacito featuring the Puerto Rican rapper Daddy Yankee instead of Justin also broke the record for all-time most views on YouTube. The music video was viewed more than 3.4 billion times since its debut in January.

It is considered a great feat especially since it reigned over the US charts and yet it is not entirely an English song.

The last time a Spanish-language song hit the top spot was in 1997 with the song Macarena.
