Elon Musk Has Just Donated $1 Million To Planting Trees

#TeamTrees, a campaign of YouTuber Jimmy Donaldson, aims to plant 20 million trees by 2020. Donaldson is conducting the campaign alongside tree-planting nongovernmental organization Arbor Day Foundation in honor of hitting the 20 million subscriber milestone on YouTube. The campaign’s website explains that the trees will be “planted in a variety of forests on public and private lands in areas of great need.”

A single tree is committed to the cause for every dollar donated. This means that the million dollars Elon Musk has promised to contribute to the cause amounts to essentially 1 million more trees for the world.

The Tesla CEO made the promise on what seems to be his favorite social media platform, Twitter. He simply replied to a tweet by Donaldson announcing that the campaign has already planted 6 million trees, asking “where are the trees being planted and what kind of trees?” After being linked to the campaign’s website Musk flippantly donated 1 million dollars by tweeting: “Ok, sounds legit, will donate 1M trees”.

Donaldson later replied to Musk, calling him “Treelon Musk” in gratitude — which Musk liked so much, he took on as his new Twitter persona. Not only did he change his Twitter name, but he also uploaded a photo of a forest as his new profile picture and cheekily tweeted “For Treebeard”.

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey has also donated $150,000 to the cause, while YouTube has said they will match the next $1 million donated. YouTubers Mark Rober and Jeffree Star have donated $50,000 each with EDM musician Alan Walker donating $100,001. The campaign has reached a total of $8 million as of Wednesday night.
