In our humble opinion, one of the best phones to come out in 2018 was the Huawei Mate 20. Its banner features is the Leica Triple Camera, but we knew there was more to the smartphone than its photo-taking capabilities. So we took it out for a test drive for a few weeks to see how it fares as our main device.
Just to give you a brief background of the phone, the Huawei Mate 20 is the brand’s latest flagship phone. It boasts a 6.53-inch display, a 16 MP Leica Ultra Wide Angle Lens, and 6GB of RAM. Our device has a 128GB memory, which you can expand, of course. Based on these facts alone, you can tell that the device is perfect for photography, movie and series viewing, and gaming. And it didn’t disappoint. Here’s our unboxing.
The Huawei Mate 20 comes in the perfect size to watch movies and play games on. The 6.53-inch display is big enough to show the details while still being light enough to carry and use with one hand. In terms of display, the highlight is the 16.7 million colors, which makes content consumption a next level experience. We watched RuPaul’s Drag Race on Netflix and it showed brighter images with all the colors popping out. The experience was the same when we played the pre-installed Spider-Man: Ultimate Power mobile game. The screen takes up most of the device so there’s more to see. The phone automatically switches to a lower screen resolution when battery runs low but it’s still gorgeous.
Given our heavy usage, we were pleasantly surprised to see that we didn’t experience any lags when switching between apps. We opened the usual: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Netflix, Spotify, and YouTube. Technically speaking, the superior performance is backed by its hardware, including the Kirin 980 SoC. There’s a lot of tech jargon when we researched this chipset but simply put, it enables users to have an impressive mobile performance.
In terms of battery life, the Mate 20 has a 4,000mAh battery. We were able to last two days without charging it even if we heavily used its camera and social media to upload photos and Instagram stories. We’re happy to report that the device has a fast-charging feature that can get you 58% in just 30 minutes. As always, it’s best to always bring a powerbank.
Of course, our favorite feature of the device would have to be the camera. We fell in love with the Leica Triple Camera, made up of the 12 MP main RGB lens, the 8 MP telephoto lens, and the new 16 MP Leica Ultra Wide Angle Lens. We took it out to a few events and you can check out the photos below. None of these have been edited:

Our favorite thing about the Huawei Mate 20 is that it’s a phone perfect for anyone. Are you a budding photographer? A selfie-lover? A gamer or a Netflix addict? Whichever one you are, you’re going to love this device.
And the best part? It has a price drop on the market!
