Dr. Henry Sy, Sr. is the recipient of the 2016 RVR Award for Nation Building

In recognition of his exceptional contribution to nation-building, Henry Sy, Sr. was the recipient of the 2016 Ramon V. del Rosario Award for Nation Building annually presented by JCI Manila together with the Asian Institute of Management (AIM) RVR Center for Corporate Responsibility.

Dr. Henry Sy, Sr. was conferred with the 2016 Ramon V. del Rosario Award for Nation Building last July 26 at the Philam Life Tower in Makati City. Previous award winners were Manuel V. Pangilinan (2015), Jaime Zobel de Ayala (2014), Vicente T. Paterno (2013), Washington Z. Scyip (2012), Oscar M. Lopez (2011), and Amb. Jesus P. Tambunting and Senen C. Bacani (2010).

Dr. Henry Sy, Sr joined JCI Manila in 1958. In 1963, he became an officer of JCI Manila. In a letter he wrote a few years ago, he attributes his success to his time in JCI Manila He said “the first thing they said when I joined the Jaycees was – and this I could never, ever forget – “If you want to be leaders, you have to make things happen” those words marked straight to my heart.”

Dr. Henry Sy, Sr. is the founder of SM and continues to serve as the chairman of the holding company SM Investment Corp. He is often referred as the Father of the Philippine Retail as he successfully built SM into one of the sector’s most dominant player in the country by adopting a highly progressive and innovative approach in expanding SM Retail. Like his Chinese name predicted (Sy Chi Sieng, which means “to attain ultimate success”), and with his vision, passion and hard work, Mr. Sy transformed Shoemart, from a humble shoe retailing business into SM, now a highly recognizable brand and icon owned by one of the Philippines’ largest conglomerates with interests and presence in retail, banking, and property.

The Ramon V. del Rosario Award for Nation Building is a joint project of the Junior Chamber International Manila and the Asian Institute of Management’s Center for Corporate Social Responsibility.

The award is named in honor of the Junior Chamber International Manila’s founding president and the “Father of Philippine Modern Industry,” recognizes individuals who best exemplify outstanding corporate citizenship and have an underlying passion for nation-building.

These individuals have made themselves worthy of honor and exemplify outstanding qualities such as entrepreneurial spirit, good corporate citizenship, and passion for nation building.
