DoE Warns 2.7-Kg LPG Cylinders are Only for Outdoor Use

LPG

The Department of Energy (DOE) warns the public that the 2.7-kilogram liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders are for outdoor use only. And that the recent fire incidents in Caloocan, Quezon City and Taguig were all related to the indoor use of the said small-sized gas cylinders.

DOE cites 2.7 kg gas cylinders have no Pressure Relief Valve (PRV) and Regulator. Without those two safety features, the possibility of LPG leaks is much higher.

As such, 2.7 kg LPG cylinders should only be used outdoors where there is proper ventilation to prevent the accumulation of LPG vapor that could trigger explosion in an enclosed space.

To better warn the public, the DoE has required manufacturers and retailers to put additional marking of ‘For Outdoor Use Only’ on the body of every small-sized 2.7 kg LPG cylinders sold in the market under Department Circular No. DC2018-03-0004 issued on March 20. The new rule takes effect immediately and penalties will be imposed on LPG refiller/marketer, dealer and LPG retail outlet found violating it.

Data from the DOE-Oil Industry Management Bureau (OIMB) lists the following LPG companies selling small-sized 2.7 kg LPG cylinders: Shine Gaz. Petron Gasulette, Superkalan (Brenton), and Powerkalan (Pryce Gases).
