Doctor tests positive for COVID-19 again days after initial recovery

Dr. Karen Abat-Senen literally sang with joy the day she fully recovered from COVID-19 after a month of confinement at the Philippine General Hospital. Sadly, it was only a few days later that the doctor began experiencing more severe symptoms.

Umuwi siya, excited siya kasi ‘yun nga babalik na siya sa mga anak niya tapos siguro two or three days, I think two days after nu’ng kaka-discharge pa lang niya, nakaranas ulit siya. Parang pneumonia-like symptoms that are severe,” Job Abat, her brother, said.

[She went home, she was so excited to return to her children then after two or three days, I think two days after she was discharged, she felt symptoms again. They were pneumonia-like symptoms that are severe.]

‘Kala nila, pneumonia lang, so dinala ulit siya. [They thought it was just pneumonia so they brought her back.] They did the whole thing and she turned up positive again,” he continued.

Dr. Abat-Senen had to be placed on a ventilator last Monday. It is still unclear why she was hit by the virus again after recovering. However, studies have shown that anti-bodies from being infected with COVID-19 can decrease or even disappear.

Dr. Abat-Senen’s family is now reaching out to the public for donations of O positive convalescent plasma from COVID-19 survivors to help with her recovery.
