In line with rebooting the long-standing Star Wars franchise, Disney chairman and CEO Bob Iger recently announced the franchise’s first stand-alone film titled “Star Wars: Rouge One”.

The spin-off title will explore events and characters “beyond the core Star Wars Saga”, According to Iger.

According to Star Wars website starwars.com, Rogue One will be directed by Gareth Edwards (Monsters, Godzilla) and written by Oscar nominee Chris Weitz (Cinderella, About a Boy, Antz). Also, the first actress cast for the film is Felicity Jones, who is known for her successful performance in the 2014 film “The Theory of Everything.”

So far, not much information is known about the stand-alone film, but  it is said to begin shooting this summer in London and is slated for release on December 16, 2016.

Two other Star Wars films are in the works: Star Wars: The Force Awakens (slated for release this December 18) and Star Wars: Episode VIII (for release on May 26, 2017).
