Yup, we’re not LION about it; Walt Disney Pictures is officially making a new Lion King live-action film.
In a press statement, the company confirmed that a follow-up movie is set to premiere in the future with award-winning director of Moonlight and If Beale Street Could Talk, Barry Jenkins, taking over the directorial role.
This news comes after the remake, despite earning mixed reviews, successfully earned US$1.6 billion in the box office.
According to sources, the follow-up will be exploring the origin story of Mufasa and the script has already been written and finished by the first movie’s screenwriter, Jeff Nathanson. It will also feature new songs, so that’s something worth looking forward to!
It’s unknown when it will premiere and if the star-studded cast of the 2019 remake, directed by Jov Favreau, will be returning to reprise their roles. We’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for updates!
