When in Manila and yearning for really good coffee, I highly recommend you head to Costa Coffee right away!

What makes Costa Coffee stand out from the rest? Well, it all starts with the coffee bean. From meticulously picking the best beans to its careful slow roasting in Old Paradise Street in London, Costa Coffee guarantees that only the perfect mixture used for their drinks.

Unlike other coffee chains, Costa Coffee uses only one blend, the Mocha ltalia, a closely guarded secret originally created by the Costa Brothers when they started their brand. It was created from the perfect combination of Arabica and Robusta beans, making it smooth, round, and rich. Today, Master Gennaro Pelliccia, the official Costa Coffee tastemaker ensures that the exclusive recipe is still the same as it was in 1971, with the perfect balance of sweetness and acidity.

It is with this special concoction that all Costa Coffee’s drinks are made from, all of which are espresso based. Before leaving the roastery, Master Gennaro makes it a point to taste the coffee, carefully preserving the taste that Costa Coffee is known for. This is why in 2009, his tongue had been insured for GBP 10 million.

Costa Coffee Masterclass

Last November 9, 2015, we had the privilege to join an exclusive invite-only Coffee Masterclass event with Coffee Master Gennaro Pelliccia at Costa Coffee One World Place BGC. The event was attended by Manila’s top online influencers as well as members of the media.

Here, we watched Coffee Master Gennaro do what he does best—taste coffee. We were each given a special Coffee Masterclass Kit which included our very own Costa Coffee apron, nameplate, notepad, pencil and silver spoon.

During the class, Gennaro talked about the different beans grown from around the World and what makes each of them different. We were all given samples of Colombian, Kenyan and Indonesian beans then he taught us on how to properly smell each coffee variety  and distinguish fruity from bitter and earthy notes. After which, he demonstrated how to pick good coffee from bad coffee, and assisted the us in slurping and sipping our way to a more sophisticated coffee tongue.

After the demos, he invited us to create our own Costa Coffee drinks, choosing from the Espresso, Cappuccino, and the Flat White.

You see, I’m not much of a coffee drinker myself but after that Masterclass with Gennaro and after tasting Costa Coffee’s signature Flat White, OMG! Life changing! I can’t believe I was able to appreciate coffee without the help of any additional creamer or sugar! It was LOVE AT FIRST SIP.
