Actor Coco Martin joined his Ang Probinsyano castmates and fellow ABS-CBN stars last Friday in protest against the ABS-CBN shutdown. Different groups such as journalists and human rights activists rallied together in front of the broadcasting network’s compound in Quezon City.
As the star of one of ABS-CBN’s longest-running and most popular shows, Martin stepped up to defend his network in light of threats against their franchise renewal.
We have to show our support not just as employees of ABS-CBN but as Filipinos],” Martin said in a live interview with ABS-CBN reporter Jeff Canoy on news program TV Patrol.
[We should not stop people from speaking up….. We need to be free in expressing our opinions and thoughts. We need to stand up for what we believe in and to say what we feel about what’s happening in our country.]
Last February 10, Solicitor General Jose Calida filed a quo warranto petition against ABS-CBN in order to revoke their franchise. This was done based on the TV network allegedly violating terms set by Congress when approving its franchise in 1995.
