Chihuahua Mexican Grill and Margarita Bar: Mexican Food in Manila

When in Manila, there are certain things that will make you say “¡Ay Chihuahua!” …and Chihuahua Mexican Grill and Margarita Bar is one of them. We recently dropped by their branch in Greenbelt 2 and we were floored by their super tasty food.

Entering the establishment, the diner will be greeted by the big red sign of Chihuahua Mexican Grill and Margarita Bar. In that sign you’ll notice its mascot, Chewi. It is said that Chewi (real name ‘Jesus’) symbolizes the good-natured mischievousness you’ll find in Chihuahua Mexican Grill and Margarita. Inside the restaurant,  you’ll also see some interesting pictures on the walls that feature some of Chihuahua’s notable customers. What’s more, you’ll notice that certain pictures have time stamps on them. The reason? Well, just read along and find out, friend.

Inside Chihuahua Mexican Grill & Margarita Bar

Mr. Elian Habayeb, the head of Chihuahua Mexican Grill and Margarita Bar, talked to us about the restaurant’s origins.  The name actually came from the expression: ¡Ay Chihuahua! This is one of the most used expressions to convey many emotions such as joy, excitement and the like. In the same vein, Chihuahua Mexican Grill and Margarita Bar would like to accomplish just that. He said that when the customer would eat their food, he would love to hear them say ¡Ay Chihuahua! because the food was incredibly good.

Another reason why Elian established Chihuahua in Manila was to showcase the best Tex Mex cuisine. As for Chihuahua’s history, Elian said that the first branch (located across A-Venue in Makati Avenue) was opened last July 2011 while the Greenbelt 2 branch opened in July of 2012. Since then, both branches have been a hit to the people of Makati from good food to an awesome party vibe late at night.  He pointed out the pictures with time stamps and said that it indicated that the branch holds late night activities (especially the Makati Avenue branch). These late night events can range from a typical party to a Salsa night every Saturday at its Makati Avenue counterpart.

After our talk, my eyes caught another interesting part inside the restaurant: The Hot Sauce Library and the Salsa Bar. ‘The Library’ has a variety of hot sauces and salsas to choose from to enhance their dining experience inside Chihuahua Mexican Grill and Margarita Bar. There were three hot sauce bottles, however, that piqued our interest in the ‘Hot Sauce Library’ so we had to try them out for ourselves.

The first one was Charlie Sheen’s Crazy Sauce. This spice sauce, made out of a ‘winning’ formula, has a mild and spicy kick to it. Dr. Evil’s Global Warming Garlic Sauce has a medium-like spiciness rating, with one ‘garlicy’ kick. The H-Bomb, which was made up of Habanero sauce with carrots, was the spiciest of the three. If you ever drop by Chihuahua Mexican Grill and Margarita Bar, you should definitely sample these three amigos of the hot sauce area.
