Cher is Going to Have a Musical Based on Her Life and It Makes Us Believe in Life After Love

2017 Billboard Music Awards - Show

Cher, the singer known as the Goddess of Pop and the voice behind “Believe” and “Strong Enough,” is going to have a musical based on her life, and it’s set to come out in 2018.

The singer confirmed the news on Twitter, saying, “Just got off [the] phone with [the] writer and director of the musical. There will [be a] performance in theater with actors, dancers, singers!! It’ll be on Broadway 2018.”

The news of a musical based on the singer’s life came out earlier this year, with Cher attending the read-through. Reports say that Jason Moore, who directed Pitch Perfect, will direct the musical; Jeffrey Seller, who produced Hamilton, Rent, Avenue Q, and In the Heights, will produce; and Rick Elice, who wrote the book for Jersey Boys, will write the script. Three actresses will play Cher in different points in her life. At the read-through, one of the actresses was Lena Hall, a Tony Award-winning actress for Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

The read through went so well that according to Cher in another tweet, “Just walked [off] the musical. I sobbed and laughed, and I was prepared not to like it. [The] audience clapped after songs and gave it a standing ovation.”

Cher has been in the spotlight for 54 years. She started as a duo with Sonny Bono, until she branched out on her own. She is behind the hit songs “Believe,” “Strong Enough,” and “I Got You Babe.” She is one of the few individuals who is nearing an EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony). Cher already has an Emmy for Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Special in 2003 for Cher: The Farewell Tour, a Grammy for Best Dance Recording in 2000 for “Believe,” and a Best Actress Academy Award in 1988 for Moonstruck.

Could the musical based on her life give her the Tony to complete the EGOT? If she wins a Tony, she will become the 13th person in history to win what many call the grand slam of American entertainment.

Just last month, Cher gave a spectacular performance of “Believe” and “If I Could Turn Back Time” at the 2017 Billboard Music Awards, where she received the Icon Award. The performance was so powerful that even Celine Dion was seen dancing and singing along backstage.
