Check Out KinaBOOKasan: A Benefit Concert to Help Build a Library

Written by: Janna Legere and Yanina Tajonera

“I do believe something very magical can happen when you read a book.” – J.K. Rowling

Certainly, there’s just something magical about it. That sensation that entraps you as your fingers make their way through the pages of your favorite book. Getting to explore the world in the comfort of your own home. T This quote holds truth; a truth that we, kinaBOOKasan, believe in. We believe books are avenues for knowledge and exploration, and everyone deserves to be a witness to this.

KinaBOOKasan, founded in 2018, is a community literacy program that focuses on helping public school students in Grades 9-12. This name came about upon realizing the treasure trove of knowledge that books contain. We’ve partnered with schools from Marikina City in the hopes of paving the way for quality public education in the Philippines through the enhancement of public school students’ critical thinking and reading comprehension skills. It is with this program that we not only wish to unlock the students’ minds but to unleash as well the bibliophile within each and every one of us.

Falling in love with a book is easy. You can fall for the character, a place or sometimes even the knowledge it contains. It is through books that we learn lessons, explore worlds, and find meaning. A true adventure brimming with literary convention and certainly, knowledge and skills gained are liberating. Unfortunately, not everyone is lucky enough to experience the joy of literature books. This is the reality kinaBOOKasan is faced with, and we are challenged to take initiative and make a change. Inspired by the call to action, kinaBOOKasan is hosting a benefit concert, BOOKed! Through this event, we aim to raise enough funds to build a library for one of our partner schools.

BOOKed will be held on September 28, 2019, at 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm in Assumption College San Lorenzo. BOOKed will feature student bands MMXV, Sunny Side Up, Sugarcane, and Motion Picture Blur. BOOKed will also include performances by Joey Tha Boy, Paolo Sandejas, Nathan & Mercury, and Curtismith! We will also include games and activities in relation to books and education. We will also include a raffle with a fee of 3 books or more! A book is a dream that you hold in your hand, and we believe that a book in every child’s hand is a dream waiting to come true.
