Pride Month is observed in June and celebrates the LGBTQ+ communities all around the world. It is held in June to commemorate the Stonewall riots, a series of demonstrations held by members of the community to protest a police raid in New York. In the early hours of June 28, 1969, a raid at the Stonewall Inn gay bar turned violent. These demonstrations are seen as an important movement in the gay liberation movement. While its history is rooted in violence, today it is a celebration with parties, events, and a Pride March.
We may still be in the middle of a pandemic but that doesn’t mean the celebration has to stop. To kick off this year’s Pride Month, there’s going to be a digital concert this weekend. Everyone is welcome to join and it’s going to be completely free.
It’s called U Matter: Pride Starts With U. According to the organizers, “we need to remind ourselves that celebrating pride starts with U, because U Matter!”
It’s going to be held on June 5, 2021, from 4PM to 6PM on Facebook Live. It’s exciting because there’s going to be a lot of performances from talented singers and drag artists, both from the LGBTQ+ community and its allies.
From the comfort of your home, you can watch singers like Jason Dy, Jayper Palma, Markki Stroem, and Zephanie. There are also going to be iconic performances from Manila’s top drag artists, including Lady Gagita, MC Blck, Precious Paula Nicole, Vinas Deluxe, Popstar Bench, Cardi XD, Jona Quinn, Maxie Andreison, and the girls from Haus of Manza. The event will be hosted by Eva Le Queen and Chal Maling.
U Matter: Pride Starts With U is presented by LoveYourself and co-presented by Spaces MNL, the PFIP – Philippine Financial & Inter-Industry Pride, Accenture, and P&G Gable.
