Cats is based on the 1939 poetry collection by T. S. Eliot entitled “Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats”. It tells the story about a group of cats called “The Jellicles”, who go out and celebrate the Jellicle Ball, and make the choice of which cat will ascend to the Heaviside Layer (wherever that is). The production first opened on West End in 1981, and eventually moved onto Broadway in 1982. To date, it’s the sixth-longest running West End musical, as the London production has run for 21 years.
The 1999 production, which will be streamed this weekend, stars Elaine Paige as Grizabella, John Mills as Gus, John Partridge as Rum Tum Tugger, Jacob Brent as Mistoffelees, and Jason Gardiner as Alonzo. CATS also features an eighty piece orchestra, and choreography by Gillian Lynne. Fans can also revisit their famous songs as “Mr. Mistoffelees”, “Mungojerrie”, and “Rumpleteazer.” And who could forget the iconic song “Memory?”
Just like its predecessors, Cats will be streaming from The Shows Must Go On YouTube channel for 48 hours, starting on May 15, 7 PM UK time. That’s on May 16, 2 AM local Philippine time.
Who’s excited for this?
