Calinao Cup 2015: A Tournament for Peace

The University of the Philippines Volleyball Club (UPVC) will be holding its annual grass volleyball competition at the UP Diliman Sunken Garden on April 16 & 17, 2016.

Calinao Cup was first held in 1999, which was then called “3-on-3 Grass Volleyball Tournament”, and later in 2000 as “Calinao Cup”, ;and is the first and only 3-on-3 grass volleyball competition in the country. It aims to promote peace and put a stop to university violence, particularly fraternity-related conflicts.

The tournament was named after Niño Calinao, a UPVC member who was killed in a fraternity-related shooting inside the campus on February 1999, after being misidentified as member of one of the fraternities involved.

Over the years, the competition has served as a venue for college varsity players and alumni to showcase their volleyball skills while also interacting with members and alumni from other schools. Among other things, the purpose of the two-day competition is to bring volleyball enthusiasts together in the spirit of sports and camaraderie.

Players from UP, Ateneo De Manila University, and National University were among the participants in Calinao Cup 2014. Team IEM, composed of Carlo Almario, Eden Canlas, EJ Ramos, Rvie Costa, and Salvador Timbal emerged as champions in the men’s division. Meanwhile, Team Maroon 5, composed of April Romero, Hannah Mangulabnan, Katherine Bersola, Nicole Tiamzon, and Vina Alinas bagged the crown in the women’s division.
