BREAKTHROUGH: Promoting Sustainable Development in the Philippines: The Advancement of Transportation Systems

In its starting years, the Annual Civil Engineering Talk has provided UP Diliman Civil Engineering students a good exposure of their future profession and industry through open discussions and forums conducted by members and friends of the organization. Having the need to broaden the influence of the Civil Engineering profession across the nation, the UP Aggregates, Inc. then opened the doors to CE students from other universities, colleges, and institutes in the country to take part in this healthy exchange of knowledge.

This symposium primarily aims to present the Civil Engineering profession to Civil Engineering students from various universities. This event has grown to be the major event of the organization that is held annually. Guest speakers such as outstanding faculty members, civil engineering professionals, and alumni are invited as speakers for the event.

On its 30th year, UP Aggregates, Inc. presents the 10th Annual Civil Engineering Talk, “BREAKTHROUGH: Promoting Sustainable Development in the Philippines: The Advancement of Transportation Systems”. The talk has two sessions per day, “CONVERGE: Transportation Infrastructures” for the morning session and “ADVANCE: Innovations and Transportation Projects” for the afternoon session. CONVERGE discusses about transportation infrastructure and its relation to urban planning and development, and transportation infrastructure focusing on the basic frameworks, engineering, design, and construction of these structures. ADVANCE focuses on the innovation and advances in modern technology that can be applied to the transportation system here in the Philippines and also tackles on the current and proposed public transportation projects here in the country.

Speakers for the event are professionals who are knowledgeable on the advancement of transportation systems. They are Ms. Julia Nebrija, Urban Planning Consultant from Inclusive Mobility Network, Mr. Carlos Celdran, Urban Specialist from Walk This Way Tours, Engr. Robert O. Dizon, DOST Assistant Secretary and MIRDC Officer-in-charge, Engr. Dante B. Baustista, President of Parsons Brinckerhoff Philippines, Inc., Dr. Crispin Emmanuel D. Diaz, Professor at UP Diliman School of Urban and Regional Planning, Engr. Rene Santiago, Transportation Engineering Consultant from Bellwether Advisory, Inc., Engr. Felicisimo Pangilinan, Deputy Director for Planning (Air Transport Division Head) from DOTC, and Ms. Yvonne P. Castro, Assistant Vice President for Sales, Marketing, and Operation from BEMAC Electric Transportation in the Philippines, Inc.

In the current status of the transportation in the Philippines, the Civil Engineering Talk aims to impart knowledge and awareness, and to inspire civil engineering students to make use of the knowledge they gained to help develop and make a change for the society especially our country.
