Bistro Lima International Buffet Week: From Mardi Gras to Mediterranean

I love food and I get a real kick out of discovering relatively unknown establishments. So when I found out and, subsequently, got invited to Bistro Lima’s International Buffet Week, I grabbed the chance to sample their offerings. Just as there are definitely a lot of great new restaurants in the north, so are there a lot of food establishments in the south just waiting to be discovered.

Bistro Lima

Bistro Lima was established in 2010 and serves as the training ground for SISFU (Southville International School affiliated with Foreign Universities) students taking up Hospitality Management or Culinary Arts. It is open from 11:30 a.m to 5:30 p.m., Tuesdays to Fridays. Their International Buffet Week, an annual week-long lunch buffet, is ongoing until today, March 20, 2015.

The theme when I went there a few days ago was Mardi Gras, and the place was bustling with students doing the various tasks of restaurant management, and customers partaking of New Orleans cuisine. I’m not very familiar with this particular style of cooking, so I was glad to be acquainted with it. New Orleans cuisine is a mix of French, African, and even Native American influences resulting in distinctive Cajun and Creole flavors.

And the menu that day was definitely a reflection of that.

Some of the dishes they offered for their New Orleans cuisine were Creole Crab Cakes with Spicy Cajun Dipping Sauce, New Orleans Gumbo, Cajun Roast Pork, Pan-Grilled Fish in Cajun Pontchartrain Sauce, Creole Clams, Louisiana Chicken BBQ, Maque Choux, and Beef Meatballs with Remoulade Sauce.

Bistro Lima’s Standout Dishes

Of all the dishes, I must say that the standouts were the Jambalaya Rice (a rice pot recipe with Spanish sausages, sweet peppers, and tomatoes), the Maque Choux (a classic Cajun dish of stewed corn, vegetables, bacon, and cream), and the Chocolate Ganache. Considering that the buffet is just Php 300 per person, it’s good value for money!  Today, the cuisine is going to be Mediterranean (I heard that it’s their most popular offering). The buffet is for RSVP, so please do call beforehand. The place seats around 40.
