Batang 80’s FYI: Sony To STOP Making Betamax Tapes

It’s the end of an era.

If any of you actually remember watching cartoons on Betamax tapes growing up, then your childhood is officially dun-zo: Sony will STOP producing Betamax tapes.

Sony Betamax

We know, we know– today’s kids have probably never even heard of a Betamax, and your old Sony recorder has been gathering dust somewhere in your basement since 1995, but now the once-loved recorder will now officially be obsolete, according to various reports.

In a statement, Sony announced that the company will stop the shipment of Betamax video cassettes and micro MV cassettes in March 2016.

The Betamax was first launched in 1975 as a household magnetic video format for recording TV shows and home movies. It eventually lost out, however, to the more popular VHS format in the 90’s, paving way to the more recent DVDs. Sony stopped producing Betamax recorders in 2002, but still made tapes for fans of the format.

Farewell, Betamax. You will remain a faded memory in our digital hearts.
