On his latest release, Sleepwalking, Tan reimagines the perfect soundtrack to an after party, moving towards a more upbeat feel compared to his previous work. His mindset going into the creation of this track was to be able to make a song that could be played in clubs or bars as soon as the pandemic came to an end; both danceable and calming—a vibe we could all use right now.

While Tan is often inspired by the nightlife and music at bars and events for his tracks, this time things were different. He had to pull his inspiration elsewhere given the circumstances and he found that through electronic duo Flight Facilities and producer Nova Casa, taking their tasteful mix of percussion and retro and synthwave instruments to create the uplifting drum beat and soothing vocals you hear on the track.

He listened to a lot of instrumental house music and alternative dance tracks to understand the placement and instrument choices used, specifically looking into how his influences managed to keep their music interesting. This eventually led him to experiment with unique drum patterns and sample choices while still finding a way to mix his signature piano and synths sounds in.

Arthur Tan is currently working on his beat tape After the Party, which is scheduled for release later this year. Listeners can expect to hear a collection of beats and songs that have a similar feel as Sleepwalking—dance music you would want to listen to after a night out with your friends at 3am.

Sleepwalking was released independently and can be streamed on Spotify, Soundcloud, and Apple Music. For any questions or concerns, feel free to get in touch with Arthur Tan through mr.arthurtan@gmail.com.
