#ArtCAN: cleaning the streets of MNL

#ArtCAN is a movement that gathers artists, students, and the local community to use art to clean up neighborhoods.

#ArtCAN started in 2016 as a social experiment by RC (Republican College), a 69-year-old college known for its criminology course in Cubao, Quezon City. We wanted to see if we could clean up 18th Ave. through art and community engagement. We gathered volunteer artists from CraftMNL, students, and the community around the school. The artists led the painting of the wall with the participation of the community. We were so pleased with the immediate impact. Not only did our drab maroon walls turn into a work of art; the community also kept the street clean after the activity! We’ve seen it happen. It works! So we’d like to keep on doing more of it!

Now that the paint has faded, we’re doing it again with top mural artists Kris Abrigo and Archie Oclos. They’re among the artists responsible for the beautiful art in BGC. They loved the idea of doing it with the community and agreed to participate!

#ArtCAN2018 will be held on Feb. 28 to March 2 at RC, 18th Ave., Cubao, Quezon City.
