Mari Dance, a creative dance agency that sees dance as reflexive to contemporary life, presents “A Dance in a Day in a Dance”, a contemporary dance production about people and their everyday lives by multi-awarded choreographer JM Cabling. The show will run from October 10–12 and 17–19 at the Doreen Black Box Theater, Areté, at the Ateneo de Manila University.
“A Dance in a Day in a Dance” brings together the collective stories of contemporary dance artists—dancers, choreographers, and the people working behind the scenes of every production. These narratives reveal the often-hidden struggles of an artist: a choreographer wrestling with frustration, a dancer fighting for their role, a search for one’s true voice, and relationships tested under pressure. The show connects the life of an artist to the audience’s own journeys, asking the essential question: “Why do we continue to fight for our dreams, despite the setbacks?”
The show features JM’s stellar homegrown students but also calls back two dancers who are making their return to the Philippine stage. Al Garcia, who until August this year was based in Taiwan having danced with Tjimur Dance Theatre, will play solo roles. Alongside him is Katrene San Miguel, who is new to performing contemporary dance, having completed her contract with Hong Kong Ballet last year after dancing with Alice Reyes Dance Philippines. Mari co-founders Michael Barry Que and Sarah Samaniego will also dance in lead roles.
Through this production, JM Cabling and Mari Dance hope to solidify contemporary dance as a way of telling stories of real people and real lives—not only as an art form but as a mirror to our human experience.
JM Cabling’s recent works include choreographing for Barefoot Theatre Collaborative’s Mula sa Buwan, The Sandbox Collective’s Side Show and Once on This Island, Scene Change’s Dagitab, and Tanghalang Pilipino’s Kisapmata. He also serves as associate choreographer in Theatre Group Asia’s upcoming production of A Chorus Line.
The show is co-presented by Areté, in partnership with Guang Ming Dance Project and UP Dance Company. Choreography by JM Cabling. Collaborators include Mikko Angeles for Direction, Arvy Dimaculangan for Sound Design, Wika Nadera for Set Design, D. Cortezano for Lighting Design, and Joyce Garcia for Video Projection Design. The show is rated PG-13.
