Is the Philippines ready for President Miriam Defensor-Santiago?
Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago is back! The fiercely outspoken senator is back after announcing she has lung cancer. And she released the best news yet: she’s running for president!
Well, she might run for president. According to her speech yesterday at the Senate for the hearing of the Commission of Appointments, “If I make a full recovery early enough from lung cancer, I am considering 3 options: First, to run for the presidency. Second, join the International Advisory Council of an NGO. Three, write a book in Washington DC, under a writing fellowship.”

She also said that the issue of the overpriced parking building in Makati has urged her to run for the presidency. She said, “Everytime I hear this news, I not only get stressed…but I also think that I should be president because it’s now so difficult to be president of this, I will describe it as a feckless or irresponsible country.”
Good news is that her latest PET CT scan shows that 80% of her cancer tumor has disappeared. Does this mean she’ll actually run for the top position?
She even has three choices for runningmates for vice president. She’s considering Davao mayor Rodrigo Duterte, former defense secretary Gibo Teodoro, and Senator Grace Poe. It’ll be fun to see how Defensor-Santiago and Duterte run the country, but sadly, Duterte turned down her offer, saying that he is not fit for national office and that’ll he retire after his term as mayor. Like Defensor-Santiago, Duterte is known for his ball-busting, take-no-prisoners approach to politics. That leaves Teodoro and Poe.
