Are Quarantine Passes and Travel Passes Still Required During the GCQ?

On Monday, June 1, 2020, Metro Manila will be placed under a General Community Quarantine (GCQ), which comes with a new set of rules to follow amidst the current pandemic. If you’re wondering if you will still need your quarantine passes, the simple answer seems to be no.

According to DILG Undersecretary Jonathan Malaya, “If an LGU (local government unit) is now under GCQ, no need for barangay quarantine passes because hindi na lockdown.”

Despite the more relaxed rules during the GCQ, though, Malaya says that LGUs can still impose localized lockdowns in their jurisdiction. This might be the case for areas that are at a higher risk of a COVID-19 outbreak. This pertains to those barangays that log more than two new COVID-19 cases within one week of monitoring.

While we no longer need to bring any quarantine passes with us when buying essential goods, however, we will still need travel passes from the Philippine National Police if we plan on crossing borders from proving to province or region to region. LGUs may also impose more control on provincial borders as needed.

Despite the more relaxed rules, those below 20 years of age and above 60 years old are also still encouraged to stay at home to stay safe from the coronavirus.
