American Idiot: Bringing Together the Best of Filipino Rock and Theatre

Green Day happens to be one of my favorite bands. In fact, the best concert that I have experienced to date – and I have been to a lot – was Green Day’s concert in Bangkok, Thailand in 2010. So, when I heard that American Idiot was coming to the Philippine stage, I was ECSTATIC.

Not only would I be able to hear some of my favorite Green Day songs on-stage in a whole new light, but the musical will also be touching on themes that I believe today’s generation will be able to relate to, including disillusionment, drugs, war, broken relationships, as well as love, dreams, change, healing and hope.

And the best part? It will be brought to the stage by two companies that I love with a passion: Globe Telecom and 9 Works Theatrical.

American Idiot is a punk rock musical that won a Grammy award for Best Musical Show and Tony Awards for Best Musical Scenic Design and Best Musical Lighting Design. As impressive as that is, though, I am much more excited to see it come to life on the Philippine stage with such an epic cast, including Miggy Chavez, lead vocalist of Chicosci, Jason Fernandez, former Rivermaya frontman, and Basti Artadi, lead singer of Wolfgang, in lead roles.

While most people were excited to see Miggy, Jason and Basti perform, though, I need to point out how amazing the rest of the cast are. The women are absolutely incredible and have such powerful voices, you’ll be in awe of their performances once you watch them on-stage. And Nel Gomez? He made me ask several people around me which band he was from after I heard him sing When September Ends alongside Miggy and Jason. It turns out Nel has a lot of experience in acting and theatre and it definitely shines through in his outstanding performance! Watch them sing “When September Ends” here:

Even the rest of the cast were jaw-dropping – full of energy and life. While this is expected from 9 Works Theatrical (I’ve never been disappointed by 9WT so far!), it was refreshing to see so much passion from the cast so early on. Truth be told, they already seemed performance-ready in our eyes and the show isn’t until the end of June!

The musical will open at the new Globe Iconic Store, Bonifacio High Street Amphitheater, an open air rock opera featuring the country’s most sought after rock stars and theater actors. The show will bring the spirit and the energy of disenchanted youth searching for the meaning of life with some of the best songs of Green Day’s career.

We got a glimpse of the Iconic Store, too, and word cannot express how epic it will be!!! Without revealing too many details, there will be two giant LED walls at the outdoor theatre, creating an interactive and experiential open door performance that passers-by will be able to watch and enjoy. (Trust me: they definitely won’t be able to ignore it.)

American Idiot will be shown on June 24, 25, 26, July 1, 2, 3, 8, 9 & 10, 2016 at 8:00pm, at Globe Iconic Store, Bonifacio High Street Amphitheater, Bonifacio Global City, Taguig.
