After the mess that was 2018, it’s okay to wish for a normal 2019

Cmon Guys its 2018

The internet seems to agree on one thing: 2018 sucked. Sure, we say that at the end of every year but this one seems to suck even more with all the political shenanigans, fake news, bad memes, and attacks on our mental health. Usually, we tell ourselves we’re going to make up for it with an awesome year next year but that might be a bad idea. I propose something different: let’s wish for a normal 2019.

Maybe we should slow down on our plans to lose weight, learn a new language, maintain a healthy social life, learn to love ourselves, go on a trip, and find a boyfriend. By promising to accomplish so many things in 2019, we’re setting ourselves up to fail. Then we’re going to find ourselves next December, proclaiming 2019 was the worst ever.

That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t set any goals for the coming year. Instead of piling goal upon goal that will be hard to achieve together, we should select two or three of the most important.

By having only one or two, we get to focus on that and have a higher chance of accomplishing it. And to make sure you accomplish your goals, we recommend making sure that they are SMART: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound.

If you had a particularly tough 2018, staying alive is accomplishment enough. The daily grind can be hard for those struggling with mental issues. If you made it out of bed and did what you were supposed to do at work or at school without setting it on fire, then you did your best.

The year 2018 may have been bad but we definitely have the power to change that (have you seen Bandersnatch???). Let’s also not forget another important thing: let’s not wait for a new year to have a fresh start. We can have a fresh start every day when we wake up.

Happy New Year, everyone!
