So, Only One Person Was Nominated for Best Lead Actor in the 2020 Tony Awards…

The 2020 Tony Awards is already making history after it made a surprising announcement today regarding its roster of nominees.

Among the many categories of the annual event, one stands out: the category for Best Lead Actor in a musical. Apparently, only one person had received a nomination for it, and it is none other than Aaron Tveit for his performance in Moulin Rouge! The Musical. (You may also be familiar with him for his portrayal of Enjolras in the 2012 film adaptation of Les Misérables and of Danny Zuko in Grease: Live!)

Reacting to the news, Tveit told USA Today: “It’s a huge honor and I am so grateful to be nominated!”

“It’s also vitally important to highlight that this recognition represents, collectively, thousands of hours of work by hundreds of individuals working on Moulin Rouge! The Musical. All the brilliant craftspeople, technicians, stagehands, and crew that run our show night to night, those in the front and back of the house, inside and outside our stage doors, our incredible audience and fans, and of course the cast, creative team, and producers,” he added.

So what does this mean for Tveit as the lone nominee? Well, he can’t win by default, that’s for sure, as he’s going to need 60% of ballots cast by Tony voters. This is also the first time since 1995 that a Tony category had only one nominee, the last one being Sunset Boulevard for both best book and best original score, which it had eventually won.

The 74th annual Tony Awards ceremony is expected to take place digitally later this year, with no final date set yet.
