A New TV Show Inspired By “Subtle Asian Traits” Facebook Group is Coming!

If you’re an Asian Facebook user, there’s no way that you haven’t heard of or aren’t part of the popular Facebook group “Subtle Asian Traits” — a global community where people share funny memes, relatable posts, and news involving Asian countries, celebrities, and culture.

Since it was founded in September 2018, the community has grown to nearly 2 million members. With an impact as significant as this, it actually comes as no surprise that it’s going to be the inspiration of an upcoming television show!

The Hollywood Reporter states that a new film studio, Jumpcut, will be developing this series that will be aptly named after the popular Facebook group. It is said to be set in college, though it’s still unknown what the story is. It will be penned by Ivan Tsang and Justin R. Ching. John Zhang, meanwhile, will serve as producer after getting the rights for the project from the nine “Subtle Asian Traits” founders who had formed the group nearly three years ago when they were still in high school.

“So the cat is out of the bag,” the team said in a post on Friday, June 25, revealing the project. “One day (hopefully!) we will get to see our stories in this group on screen. Growing up, many of us did not have the community to share some of the nuances of being Asian. Starting the group, we never thought that Subtle Asian Traits would impact so many people and result in such a shared sentiment of belonging.”

“Over the past couple months, we’ve been in contact with passionate filmmakers, producers and writers in our community who wanted to bring the sentiment of subtle asian traits to the screens. We’re humbled in being part of their vision to focus on the diverse ‘subtle’ asian traits throughout the diasporic Asian community,” they added.

The series is currently under development but we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for updates!
