9 Potential COVID-19 Vaccines are Currently Being Developed in China

Around 1,000 Chinese scientists have been busy studying and developing potential vaccines in the global fight against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

In China alone, there are currently 9 vaccines that were developed through 5 different approaches. These include an inactivated vaccine, a viral vector-based vaccine, and a gene vaccine. However, none of the vaccines have progressed to clinical trials as of yet since they are still working to satisfy the regulations and standards set by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The frontrunner of the 9 vaccines is from vaccine producer CanSino Biologics who worked together with the Academy of Military Medical Sciences. Their team is already searching for volunteers to take part in a 6-month clinical trial of the treatment.

“The vaccine does not contain infectious substances, is highly safe and stable, and requires only one inoculation,” the Hubei Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said in its request for volunteers.

Another vaccine currently being developed in China uses messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) technology to copy the genetic code of the virus instead of the actual virus. This is similar to American biotech startup Moderna’s experimental vaccine which began a Phase I trial in the United States this week.

All 9 vaccines are in the process of completing preclinical trial studies and are set to begin clinical trials in April.
