Drag artists are experts when it comes to makeup. With a few strokes of the brush and a dab of lipstick, they can transform themselves into hyper-feminine women or even otherworldly creatures if they want to go a more creative route.
If you want to improve your makeup skills, we interviewed 8 drag artists and asked them to share their secrets with us. We’re taking notes:

“Makeup looks best on well-prepped and moisturized skin. So always moisturize before applying makeup. The wing of your eyeliner can make your look more snatched. The higher the angle, the more pulled back the face looks. If you have unsteady hands, when applying lip liner pencil, you can use a flat eye shadow brush and use a darker shade of eye shadow to line the edges of your lips instead of using a lip liner pencil. Always use gloss on top of nude lips. When in doubt about what lipstick to wear, pick a color that matches a small item in your outfit (i.e shoes, fabric print, accessories).”

“If you have oily skin, go for the primer and you can also use spray net as your setting spray. Promise, it can help if you don’t have sensitive skin. Just to hold the makeup that you wear.”

“It’s really important to have your lips exfoliated and moisturized before applying lip products. I’d use a lip scrub after a shower, then before I start with my makeup (aside from the primer and moisturizer) I’ll put on a lip balm so it’s plump and smooth once lipsticks and gloss are applied at the end!”

“Always customize your false lashes. And invest in a good base, (foundation, concealer, powder). Lastly, after doing your makeup spray a thin layer of hairspray to lock in the makeup. It will last all night.”

“The number one tip I love sharing to all the beginner makeup artists is to trust the process. For the last five years of doing different kinds of makeup, sobrang dami ko nang nasayang na looks [I wasted a lot of looks]. Every time na hindi ko nagugustuhan ang itsura ng ginagawa ko, binubura ko kaagad [Every time I don’t like a look, I take it off right away] even though I’m not finished yet. Until I joined this virtual makeup competition last 2020.
I learned how to trust the process while doing your makeup. Hindi lahat ng makeup look maganda agad sa simula [Not all makeup looks will be good at the start]. Focus on what you’re doing to achieve the makeup look you have in your vision. Don’t overthink too much, breathe, and trust the process.”

“I always stack multiple lashes. I sometimes make my own lashes and experiment with different thicknesses. It makes my eyes look more elevated. I usually wear 6-8 pairs of lashes. It’s a little heavy but it’s gonna be worth it!”
