5 Reasons Why The Millennial ‘Mary Poppins Returns’ is a Joy to Watch

When I was a child, there were only two movies that would watch on repeat: ‘The Sound of Music’ and ‘Mary Poppins’. So, when I heard that there was going to be a sequel this many years after the first movie (which came out in 1964), I was a bit skeptical about the whole ordeal. Well, after watching it at Resorts World Manila after our block screening in partnership with PMCM Management; I realized I had nothing to worry about, after all. Here’s why.

5 Reasons Why The Millennial ‘Mary Poppins Returns’ is a Joy to Watch

5. Emily Blunt fully embraces the role of Mary Poppins.

Growing up with Julie Andrews as Mary Poppins, I thought it would be impossible to follow in her footsteps. However, Emily Blunt put all of my worries to rest. She fully embraces the role of Mary Poppins with the same charm, grace, and elegance of Julie Andrews.

4. The cast, in general, is great.

Emily Blunt aside, the cast includes other great actors, as well, including Lin-Manuel Miranda as Jack, Emily Mortimer as Jane Banks, Julie Walters as Ellen, Colin Firth as William Wilkins, and Meryl Streep as the unforgettable Topsy. That aside, there are also several cameos that will make your old school-Mary Poppins-loving heart soar.

3. The songs are catchy.

As with the old Mary Poppins, the songs in ‘Mary Poppins Returns’ are incredibly catchy. My friends couldn’t stop singing ‘Nowhere to Go But Up’ way after we had left the cinema.

2. It will evoke nostalgic memories.

It isn’t just Emily Blunt’s Mary Poppins-like demeanor and the unexpected cameos that will make you nostalgic; it’s the entire movie, in general. ‘Mary Poppins Returns’ is basically just our old school Mary Poppins made for today’s generation. It has a scene with cartoons just like the old movie. The song during bath time is reminiscent to the old song during medicine time. The lamplighters have a dance number similar to the chimney sweeps of old. And when they play Feed the Birds as background music? I actually teared up.

1. Your kids will want to watch the original afterwards.

I think the best thing about ‘Mary Poppins Returns’, though, is the fact that children will want to watch the original ‘Mary Poppins’ afterwards. And what better is there than sharing your childhood with your children?
