Since Johnny Depp has been cast has Grindelwald to mixed reactions, the producers behind Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find them has announced that a young Dumbledore will be featured in the sequel — and the search is out to find an actor to play him.
While Dumbledore’s age in the film hasn’t been specified, it’s safe to speculate that they’re looking for someone close to Johnny Depp’s age. In no specific order, we’ve rounded up some actors (from the UK, mind you!) who would do well as one of the Wizarding World’s most popular wizards.
4. Ewan McGregor
Where you’ve seen him: Star Wars Episodes I-III, Moulin Rouge, Trainspotting
Should Ewan don the Hogwarts robes and crescent-shaped spectacles, this wouldn’t be the first time he’s played a younger version of a mentor-like character — he played the young version of Obi-Wan Kenobi, father figure of Luke Skywalker. Handsome yet weathered and experienced, he could very well play up as an antithesis to Depp’s Grindelwald as a young Albus.
.
3. Matthew MacFayden
Where you’ve seen him: Pride and Prejudice, The Three Musketeers, Anna Karenina
While not an obvious choice, the more you stare at photos of Matthew MacFayden, the more convincing he is that he can pass for a young Dumbledore, with his striking yet sincere and earnest eyes. A staple in the period film genre, there’s a magnanimity to Matthew’s look that suits the kindheartedness Dumbledore was known for.
.
2. Michael Sheen
Where you’ve seen him: The Twilight Saga, TRON: Legacy, 30 Rock
Michael Sheen has played a host of characters as a critically-acclaimed stage actor, but it’s his previous foray into the fantasy genre via a stint in the Twilight film franchise that gives him edge, where he played Aro, one of the Volturi brothers that has led the vampire world. While Dumbledore would be a clear departure from his previous character, Michael (who was previously married to Kate Beckinsale!) can bring a certain flourish to Dumbledore, who was eccentric but never campy.
.
1. Colin Firth
Where you’ve seen him: Kingsman, The King’s Speech, Bridget Jones’ Diary
Colin would undoubtedly bring some more star power to an already-powerful vehicle, if cast as Dumbledore. Genteel and stately, he would definitely be suited to play Dumbledore, who is on the rise to become one of the most respected wizards.
Thoughts on this? Who do you think should play Dumbledore?
