Back in the day, before my children hacked my interests in movies and TV series, I loved watching sci-fi TV series. The younger generations may not know this, but some of the movies we loved watching started as TV series first.
Here are my top 3 favorite TV series that turned into movies.
Star Trek
Created by Gene Roddenberry as early as 1964 Capt. Kirk, Mr. Spock, Dr. McCoy, Mr. Sulu, Scotty, Uhura and Mr. Chekov were the main stays. Six television series make up Star Trek:
- The Original Series
- The Animated Series
- The Next Generation
- Deep Space Nine
- Voyager
- Enterprise.
These ran from 1966 to 2017, the longest TV series of the same title.
In 1979, Paramount pictures came out with a movie version Star Trek: The Motion Picture. This was followed 5 more movies with the original characters and actors, 1982-1991.
Similarly, Star Trek Next Generation had 4 movies starring the cast of Star Trek Next Generation; this was from 1994, 1996, 1998 and 2002.
Star Trek also had 3 reboot movies, taking us back to the early days of Kirk, McCoy, Spock and the rest of the original characters, this time with new and younger actors.
Mission Impossible
Impossible Missions Force (IMF) first came out on TV in 1966 and ran until 1973.
After 15 years (1988) the series was revived starring Peter Graves as Jim Phelps one of the original actor and character from the first series. Other actors from the original series did cameos and guest performances. However, after only 2 seasons the show was canceled.
In 1996 Mission impossible was made into a movie, starring Tom Cruise, 4 more movies of the same series followed and another one is currently filming and will be shown in 2018. How the IMF team pulls off the impossible is what made the TV show and movie successful.
Charlieโs Angels
Once upon a time, there were three girlsโฆand the rest was TV history.
Charlieโs Angels came out in 1976 and ran until 1981. The original casts were Jaclyn Smith, Kate Jackson, and Farrah Fawcett. In 1977 Fawcett was replaced by Cheryl Ladd who remained on the show until it was canceled in 1981. A reboot was attempted in 2011 but after only 4 episodes it was canceled.
In the year 2000, the TV series was made into a movie following the original plot of the 1976 show. New characters were introduced and only Bosley and Charlie remained. A sequel came out in 2003. A reboot is underway and will be shown in 2019.
Sometimes, I just take being sick a “blessing in disguise.” Why? Because I get to rest and watch my good old time TV series.
So, what’s your favorite TV series that eventually turned into movies?
